Mental-health and crisis resources

This is a starting point, not a complete directory or a substitute for a local clinician. Services and availability can change; check each organisation's own site. If anyone is in immediate danger, call local emergency services now: 000 in Australia, 911 in the US or Canada, 112 in the UK and Europe, or 999 in the UK.

Immediate support

Information and ongoing support

  • Australia: SANE offers support and information for people affected by complex mental-health conditions. Its services are not emergency services.
  • United States: NAMI offers education, support and information for people living with mental illness and their families. Its HelpLine is not a crisis line.
  • United States: Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance offers peer support and education for people living with mood disorders.
  • United Kingdom: Bipolar UK offers bipolar-specific information and peer support. It is not an emergency service.

If you are worried about another person

Take statements about self-harm seriously. If there is immediate danger, contact local emergency services. For less immediate concerns, contact a crisis line for advice and encourage the person to speak with a local qualified professional. Do not rely on a forum report or a reply from a volunteer to reach someone in time.

Based on lived experience and general information, not medical advice. For urgent help, use your local crisis or emergency service.
